  • U.S. Avocado Market Poised to Surpass 3 Billion Pounds for the First Time

Hass Avocado Board — According to the latest volume count, accumulated through the course of 2025, and collective projections for the balance of the year, the Hass Avocado Board has concluded with a high degree of confidence, that the total avocado volume in the U.S. market is on track to exceed 3 billion pounds in 2025 — a historic milestone that underscores the fruit’s growing popularity and the strength of the avocado industry’s supply chain. This has been a number that has been on the industry’s radar since 2020, and after five years of weather-related impacts on crops from almost every country of origin, it appears that 2025 will be the year when we cross the 3 billion pound threshold.

“This is a landmark moment for the avocado industry,” said Emiliano Escobedo, Executive Director of the Hass Avocado Board. “Surpassing 3 billion pounds is not just a number — it’s a testament to the tireless efforts of producers, importers, and marketers who have worked together to meet the growing demand for avocados in the U.S. market.”

The projected volume represents a four percent increase from the previous year and reflects sustained consumer interest in avocados as a versatile, nutrient-dense food. It also highlights the success of industry-wide initiatives to promote year-round availability, enhance quality, and educate consumers on the benefits of avocados.

There has been tremendous amounts of hard work and collaboration across the industry to transform avocados from being a misunderstood specialty fruit to today’s produce aisle powerhouse. Avocado Nation: An American Success Story, now streaming at HassAvocadoBoard.com/HAPRIOImpact, looks at how the business opportunity for avocado producers and importers has transformed since the Hass Avocado Promotion, Research and Information Order (HAPRIO) created the Hass Avocado Board (HAB) in 2002.

“Avocados have become a staple in American households, and this milestone reflects how deeply they’re woven into our food culture,” Escobedo added. “As we look ahead, HAB remains committed to supporting the industry through data-driven insights, strategic marketing, and collaborative innovation.”

Congratulations to everyone in the Hass avocado industry for this monumental achievement. It is the result of the hard work and dedication of every grower, every association, every packer, shipper, exporter and importer, and marketers, to have collectively reached this mark. A big thank you to our customers and consumers who have made our avocados one of America’s favorite fruits – and we will continue our work on behalf of all our stakeholders, on our way to number one!

  • New Strategies for Engaging Avocado Shoppers

Hass Avocado Board — A newly released Hass Avocado Board (HAB) study, Avocado Path-to-Purchase: The Making of a Household Staple, reveals how U.S. shoppers have increasingly embraced avocados over the past decade and what motivates them at each step of the avocado shopping journey. The study highlights the evolving behaviors of today’s avocado shoppers and their pre-store preferences, in-store experiences, and post-store satisfaction. Drawing on nationwide shopper data, the research reveals key shifts in consumer behavior and identifies key insights and opportunities for retailers and merchandisers to drive growth in the avocado category.

    KEY STUDY FINDINGS:

    • Ripeness and Visual Appeal: Shoppers rely on visual cues and firmness, but many lack the ability to identify ripeness.
    • Buyer Profiles: Heavier buyers plan their purchases and use avocados throughout the week. In contrast, lighter buyers are more easily swayed by compelling in-store displays and promotions.
    • Format Preferences: Bulk avocados continue to lead, but the preference for bagged avocados has grown, giving rise to shoppers who purchase both types.
    • Impulse & Satisfaction: While many plan their avocado purchases, high-quality displays and freshness often inspire additional, unplanned sales, especially when shoppers have had positive experiences at home.
    • Execution Matters: Freshness, attractive displays, and clear signage that help shoppers identify ripeness cues can make it easier to convert shoppers into avocado purchases.

Read the Path to Purchase Study HERE.

    INSIGHTS INTO ACTION:

To accompany this study, HAB has also released an on-demand webinar that delves deeper into the key drivers and barriers influencing shopper decisions, outlining actionable strategies to engage shoppers and grow category sales. View webinar HERE.

  • Hass Avocado Board Trains 50 New Leaders Through BOLD

The Hass Avocado Board is pleased to congratulate 14 members of the Board Leadership Development Program (BOLD) Class 4 who completed their BOLD experience in Oxnard, California, on March 11th and 12th, with a celebratory dinner the evening of the eleventh and a graduation ceremony on the 12th. This group, like all of the BOLD Classes before them, presented their special project work to the group and offered valuable insights into the industry’s burgeoning interest and complex job of tackling and communicating our Sustainability story.

This group’s presentations showed that the industry is making some commendable strides in its sustainability efforts, and the Class was impressed by some of the insightful work that is being done at companies large and small in the face of questioning from industry outsiders. It was apparent from the presentations that many in the avocado space are looking at ways to measure, improve, and communicate what we are doing in our production areas to be transparent with our supply chain.

After the special projects were completed, it was time for the official presentation of the BOLD Certificates. After the graduation ceremony was complete – it was now official – the program had reached the half-century mark, with FIFTY BOLD Graduates having progressed through the program in the first four years of operation.

Then, it was time for some field learning over at Brokaw’s Nursery in Ventura, CA. After a quick lunch and group discussion at the Nursery, despite the slight rain and drizzle, we ventured out and made our way up the hill to visit Brokaw Ranch and learned about some high-density avocado planting happening in their groves. Matias Purcell gave a detailed explanation about how high-density planting needs much more aggressive and high-level care than traditional planting, but the results are paying off handsomely for the effort. We then made our way back to the nursery, and the class got the thrill of listening to the story of how grafting had changed the industry, from the man himself, Rob Brokaw, whose father, before him, had done extensive work in making the grafting of avocados into an art form. This, in turn, created the tools that were necessary to have the Mother Hass tree in La Habra, CA, turned into a production powerhouse of Hass avocado trees all over the world.

It was a day filled with fun, learning, and laughter, networking with new friends and colleagues, who will now enjoy a special bond as the BOLD Class 4 team of future industry leaders – well done, one and all!

Also, a BIG thank you to all of the avocado associations & commissions for their continued support of the BOLD program – because of you, this program is helping the entire industry’s future success.

  • Avocado Sales Back to Record-Breaking Highs

Second quarter holidays generated the highest growth rates in 2024 according to the most recent Avocado Holiday Retail Recap created by the Hass Avocado Board (HAB). Cinco De Mayo, Memorial Day and Father’s Day sold a combined 154.6 million units, generating $191.6 million in dollar sales, a $32.4 million increase in dollar sales versus 2023.

Additionally, all three holidays contributed to category promotional gains in promotional lift. During Cinco de Mayo week, small avocados (4046) fueled unit growth due to their large share of category sales. However, promotional performance showed large avocado (4225) promotions outperformed small avocados (4046) and bagged avocados, driving a +73.2% promotional lift in volume, +35.7 points higher than the promotional volume lift achieved by small avocado (4046) promotions.

Key highlights from the report include:

    • Cinco De Mayo sales and units soared, reaching four-year highs in both dollars and units. Avocado units reached 59.8M, a +2% increase versus the prior year, while dollar sales soared +22% to $68.5M. Small avocados (4046) drove unit growth during the holiday, contributing an additional +3.1M units to the category.
    • During Memorial Day, avocado dollars climbed +18% to $61.5M in sales while units fell -2% to 47.5M units. The average holiday selling price reached $1.29/unit, a +20% increase compared to the prior year.
    • Father’s Day avocado dollar sales secured $61.6 in sales, a four-year high and a +22% increase from the prior year while unit sales declined -1% to 47.3M units. Large avocados promotions performed well during the holiday generating the highest promotional volume lift at +20%.
The Hass Avocado Board’s recently published second quarter retail recap notes that Cinco De Mayo promotions for large avocados (4225) outperformed other Q2 holidays. Promoted sales of large avocados generated a volume lift for each holiday. However, Cinco De Mayo largely outperformed other summer holidays.

The Avocado Holiday Retail Recap provides detailed analyses of promoted and non-promoted volume and dollar sales, pricing dynamics, lift metrics, and promotional efficiency across various bulk avocado sizes and bagged avocados. Each report also details regional sales information providing insightful information for future holiday promotion planning.

  • How A Decade of Supporting Why Avocados Are “Extra” Is Moving Industry Forward

As the avocado industry continues to boom in sales and pop culture, Fresh Avocados – Love One Today®, a leading science-based resource founded by the Hass Avocado Board (HAB), celebrates its 10th anniversary with news of continued big strides in elevating positive awareness for the health benefits of avocados, a proven driver for stimulating demand in the U.S. Founded in 2013, Love One Today has focused on reducing purchase barriers by telling avocado’s nutrition story, starting with the benefits of good fats amidst a challenging landscape of contradictory policy opinions. As registered dietitians are amongst the most influential health professionals when it comes to nutrition, it is especially exciting to see that in the 2023 HAB tracking study analyzing health professional’s attitudes and awareness, eighty percent (80%) of surveyed registered dietitians now recommend avocados as a source of good fat to their clients, reflecting a 25% increase since 2013.1,2

“For ten years, Love One Today has been steadily improving public opinion and advocacy for the nutritional value of fresh avocados because the health benefits are a key purchase driver,” explained Gina Widjaja, Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, Hass Avocado Board. “The impact on demand as well as pop culture thanks to targeted programs for registered dietitians validates the approach and prompted successful campaigns focused on physicians and nurses who increasingly want to be more confident advising patients about nutrition. We are driven to keep supporting the industry by moving the conversation from avocados being a fad, party food to an invaluable investment in good health.”

Love One Today works in partnership with the Avocado Nutrition Center, HAB’s research resource dedicated to discovering and validating the role of fresh avocados in improving human health without bias.

“This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the first publication supported by theAvocado Nutrition Center,” commented Dr. Nikki Ford, Senior Director of Nutrition, Hass Avocado Board. “After a decade of learning and nearly 50 peer-reviewed publications, passion still runs high to add to the growing body of evidence supporting avocado’s benefits on heart health, weight management, diabetes and healthy living across the lifespan.”

Love One Today is increasingly recognized as a leading source of the healthiest reasons and tastiest ways to enjoy avocados. The resource provides a robust pipeline of free recipes, educational handouts, and easy-to-follow meal plans on LoveOneToday.com to help health professionals break down the science and further inspire their clients to enjoy avocado’s goodness every day.

The Love One Today nutrition marketing program and research supported by the Avocado Nutrition Center are key to driving public trust in how Hass avocados are healthy for people, a core tenet of HAB’s 5 Year Objectives. The opportunity for the future of the industry grows as the science-based relationship between avocados and priority health pillars is better understood and promoted.

  • Hass Avocado Board Introduces ‘BOLD’ New Class of Avocado Industry Leaders

A new generation of leaders has graduated from the Hass Avocado Board (HAB) Board Leadership Development (BOLD) program with specialized training and real-world experience that ensures a stronger future for the industry. The robust, year-long program exposes emerging leaders from across the supply chain to experts and resources essential to forming a well-rounded understanding of the business and being considered board-ready. Newly added experiential learning opportunities, like the two-day, in-person briefing with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in D.C., exemplify how the program immerses participants into the complexities as well as opportunities to take the industry forward.

“With the avocado industry booming at more than $7 billion in retail dollars, there is constant, dynamic change that requires leaders to have a big picture overview of all the relevant market forces influencing growth,” said John McGuigan, Director of Industry Affairs for the Hass Avocado Board. “The rising stars of BOLD Class 2 graduate with greater strategic vision, a stronger professional network and overall, more excitement and confidence to lead by serving on a board.”

As supply strives to keep pace with avocado’s growing popularity, the strategic evolution of instruction and expansion of influential guest speakers is becoming one of the BOLD program’s signature qualities. The 2022-2023 curriculum kept its foundational deep dive into the rules of governance and financial and fiduciary responsibilities of board members at the University of California, Davis and added a trip to Washington D.C. to meet with USDA leadership. Through hands-on meetings with industry veterans, expert HAB staff and mentors with avocado board experience, participants take away from the program fresh insights and a broader perspective of what board service entails.

  • Hass Avocado Board’s 2022 Year in Review

Hass Avocado Board — The U.S. avocado industry faced several challenges in 2022, which kept markets, and marketers facing challenges with their customers and with consumers, that had not been seen in recent years. Despite increasing shipments from every source of supply, except one, the industry actually went backwards on supply directed to the U.S. market, and the ensuing shortage increased the pricing structure of the market in ways not seen in many years. In the end, producers certainly profited from the shortage of fruit, as grower returns were at the highest levels in history and were certainly a benefit to the producers, we all rely on. But the increased wholesale prices sent retail and foodservice prices into the stratosphere, and those pricing levels had impacts, both during the shortage, and subsequent to it. Let’s dig into the numbers.

The big picture number, total volume in the U.S. dropped by almost 6% for 2022, compared to the volumes shipped in 2021.  Volume for the year came in at 2.677 billion pounds, compared to the historical mark hit in 2021 of 2.835 billion pounds. This shortage of volume was identified in early 2022 in the second half of the Mexican crop cycle that runs from July through June, and the recognition of the shortage sent markets skyrocketing in the early part of the year, and the pricing frenzy was on, and producers in all countries of origin scrambled to get fruit into this market. As stated above, every country of origin, with the exception of Mexico had higher volumes in 2022 vs 2021, California up almost 6%Chile up almost 80% from the previous short year, Peru up 46% for its highest shipment total to the U.S ever at 276 million pounds. And the newest player Colombia showed the largest percentage increase at over a 450% increase from 6.6 million to 36.8 million pounds in 2022. The Mexico shortage, coming on the heels of its largest crop ever in 2021, while not a total surprise caught many off guard. Mexico shipments were down, despite the fact that Jalisco was finally granted access to the U.S. marketplace by over 12%, from 2.378 billion pounds to 2.079 billion pounds, sending the market into the high price, lower volume scenario.

The subsequent increase at retail shelf pricing was the result, as consumers faced an average increased fruit price at retail from $1.11 in 2021 to $1.30 in 2022 – an increase of 16.8%. Retail margins shrank, foodservice operators and distributors struggled to keep pricing in restaurants stable, and the market saw wholesale prices on 25 lb. boxes of fruit it had not seen in many seasons.

All this in a market that was still shaking off the lingering effects of COVID, and the beginnings of inflation started to be felt by consumers, not just in avocado or food pricing, but across the board in most consumer goods. The whole industry felt the impact, some good for producers, and some bad for importers, sellers, and distributors. The industry made its way through the situation, but the market, and the increased retail shelf pricing was felt long after the new crops came on, and the slower velocity at retail was certainly impacted for longer than the shortage.

This lower total volume backed per capita consumption backwards for the year, going from 8.6 PPC in 2021, down to 8.0 PCC in 2022.

These will certainly be the events that will be remembered for 2022. Not the increased visibility and emphasis on Sustainability. Not the increasing body of work we have in the nutrition space, and not the growing supply from the other countries outside of Mexico. No, it will be remembered as the “short year”, and all produce commodities have to deal with what Mother Nature gives us and play the market accordingly. But we will see what 2023 will bring, and keep our eye on the consumer, and see if we can put more volume through a system this industry has cultivated for the last 20 year.
