The California Grown piece was good, but I think you and Kiaran are missing an opportunity to highlight the things that make California produce worth buying, beyond quality and market share.
You and others talk about the laws and regulations that our farmers must comply with, which add expense, but protect our workers and our environment. We need to recoup those costs. New pesticides that better protect our honeybees and other pollinators are more expensive, but we all support healthy pollinators, and beekeeping is a big agricultural business in our state. The wages, working conditions, sanitation and housing that our industry provides our key workers is beyond what our competitors in other states and any country in the world provides. These are the way we value and treat our workers, but they come with a cost, so the consumer needs to know that by selecting California Grown produce and products they are contributing to these California values.
So, besides touting California quality, we need to promote California values with our shopping choices and support our growers and farm workers.
